Pomperaug-Newtown: Co-op Boys’ Ski Team Wins CISL

The Pomperaug-Newtown co-op boys’ ski team won the CISL State Open Championship on Monday, March 2, at Mt. Southington for the first time in either school’s history.

SOUTHINGTON — The Pomperaug-Newtown co-op boys’ ski team won the CISL State Open Championship on Monday, March 2, at Mt. Southington for the first time in either school’s history.

The boys’ team was led by Nick Jacobs, who came in third place out of 130 racers. 

Also scoring were Alec Zackin, fifth; Andrew Jacobs, ninth; Matt Jacobs, 12th; Jack Funk, in his first race back since his injury, 21st, and Ty Fralley, 64th.

The girls’ team finished fourth overall with Lauren Jacobs finishing fifth out of 140 skiers. Also scoring for the girls’ team were Lindsey Abarzua, 21st; Adrianna Morse, 29th; Anna Latta, 54th; Narayna Thind, 82nd, and Emily Falk, 85th.

In the Southwest Conference competitions both the boys’ and girls’ teams defeated Weston and Joel Barlow to take the 2020 SWC team titles.

Lauren Jacobs took the girls’ individual SWC title with Adrianna Morse placing third; Lindsey Abarzua placing ninth; Anna Latta placing 10th; Emily Falk placing 11th; and Naryana Thind placing 12th.

For the boys’ SWC individual competition Alec Zackin placed first with Nick Jacobs right behind in second. Andrew Jacobs, Matt Jacobs Kyle Fralley placed fourth, sixth and ninth, respectively.

Lauren Jacobs, Nick Jacobs and Alec Zackin were awarded All-State honors and Andrew Jacobs was awarded All-State Honorable Mention by the league.

Also for the first time, the boys’ team finished in a three-way tie for first in Regular Season Class L Competition, making the team Conference, Division and Overall State Champions.

“We are all over the moon with the way both our boys’ and girls’ teams performed this season,” said Coach Paul Zackin. 

“They raced aggressively and consistently over the entire season and in the State Championship against some tough competition to achieve the goals we set.”
