MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY — After a fine week with three wins, the Pomperaug girls’ basketball team now has a 7-2 record for the season.

Early in the week the Panthers defeated Naugatuck, 56-26, in a non-league game in Southbury.

Jumping to an 18-6 lead in the first period, the winners stretched their advantage to 26-12 by the half-time horn.

Claudia Schneider scored 24 points for Pomperaug, while also pulling down 12 rebounds and dishing out six assists. Megan Reilly scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Taylor Brennan chipped in seven points.

Winless Weston was the next team to fall to the Panthers, as they lost 62-25. A 24-2 outburst by Pomperaug in the second stanza was more than enough to win the game.

Schneider scored 18, while getting eight caroms and five assists and steals. Reilly scored 15 points and pulled down 10 rebounds. Brennan chipped in with 12 points.

Emma Pfeiffer made six assists and stole the ball five times.

Reilly was the hero in a 51-49 victory over Immaculate on Saturday. The forward converted a conventional three-point play with eight seconds left and it proved just what the Panthers needed to gain the triumph.

Reilly was a double-figure points scorer for the eighth time in nine games as she collected 17, while also having 11 rebounds.

Schneider made a trio of three-pointers on her way to 18 points and 13 caroms, while Sophia Zahran grabbed seven rebounds.

Colleen Blackman of Immaculate topped all scorers with 20 points.
