Pomperaug Field Hockey: Team Works to Defend Championship

Leading the Pomperaug field hockey team this season are captains (standing, from left) Leah Kowalasky and Kari Richardson along with fellow seniors (front row) Julia Manson, Nicole Marino, Melissa Perelmuter and Nageena Thind.

MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY — Coming off a 16-1-3 season, the Pomperaug field hockey team will have its work cut out as the Panthers attempt to defend their South-West Conference championship from last season.

The Panthers defeated Immaculate, 1-0, in the closing minutes of the championship game last year, for their first league title since 2013.

Anne Strobel, who coached that team, enters her eighth season as the head coach, noting that graduation has hit the team quite hard.

“We graduated eight players from last year, so this is going to be a big building year,” said Coach Strobel, who played for the Panthers in her high school days.

“Our underclassmen have some very big shoes to fill, but they are excited and looking forward to getting started.”

Seniors Kari Richardson and Leah Kowalasky will captain the squad. Kowalasky was voted to the All-Colonial team last season.

A pair of juniors, Jessica Evans and Maddie McKune, also are returning All-Colonial players.
