MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY — The CIAC State Open Cross Country championships were run at Wickham Park in Manchester last Friday.

Despite wet, soggy grounds, more than 100 runners in the boys’ and girls’ races covered the 5K (3.1-mile) course in perfect crisp fall weather conditions. The Pomperaug girls’ team placed 16th.

Hall High School won the girls’ race, while Tolland High School won the boys’ race. Pomperaug’s Trey Generali placed 19th in the boys’ race with a time of 16:38.

Pomperaug’s Kate Wiser, winner of the Class L race, had a slower time this week and fell into second place behind Mari Noble of Greenwich. Wiser posted a time of 18:23, just 10 seconds slower than Noble’s winning time of 18:13.

The week before, Wiser had set a course record on the same course with a time of 17:39.

Wiser’s teammates followed: 52nd, Maddie Villa, 20:41; 142nd, Molly Flanagan, 22:24; 146th, Charlotte Brehmer, 22:28; 151st, Amanda Kugle, 22:37; 167th, Alexis Julis, 23:31; 177th, Madelyn Vanness, 23:59.
