Oxford High School: Cross Country Team Small but Mighty

The small but mighty Oxford cross country team consists of (from left), juniors Kendra Grillo and John Covino and sophomores Colin Czuchra and Olivia Zak.

OXFORD — The Oxford boys’ cross country team was a small team last year with just six boys out running; this season, the Wolverines are still searching for more runners to fill out the roster.

In the first meet of the season, the Wolverines lost to Kaynor Tech 15-50. The winner of the race was Oxford’s Colin Szuchra, a sophomore, in a time of 19:33.

Only one other runner from the Wolverines placed. Junior John Covino was fifth in a time of 22:54.

The Oxford girls’ cross country team ran in its first meet of the season with only two members on the team.

In a program struggling to attract athletes, the good news is that Oxford’s runners finished in first and second places in the meet against Kaynor Tech.

The bad news is that this was still a “team loss.”

Junior Kendra Grillo was the top runner in the meet, covering the 3.1-mile course in a time of 25:01. Her teammate Olivia Zac placed second with a time of 25:22.
