OXFORD — The high school football season gets underway soon, and the Oxford team is hoping to play a full 10-game schedule beginning on Friday, September 10.
Coach Joe Stochmal has a good turnout of players who are raring to get started after sitting out all of last year due to the Covid situation.
The Wolverines would like to build back into the type of team they were in 2016, when they had an 8-2 record.
Some talented seniors will be called upon to lead the team. Among them is Ayden Ferrante, who will play as a running back and linebacker. Ferrante is speedy, strong and plays a very physical style.
Other seniors who Coach Stochmal will be counting on are receiver/defensive back Joe Biondo, receiver/linebacker Chris Argonese and quarterback/linebacker Justin Black.
Nick Cuomo is a 6’3 junior who will be a receiver, where hopefully his height and speed will make him a fine target.
A junior running back is Cody Russell, who was a starting player back in 2019. He will play at the inside linebacker position on defense.
A pair of sophomores who will play important roles are Matt McGuire, who will play many positions, and Mike Rich, who will be the center on the offensive line.
The Wolverines will begin with a pair of tough opponents. They will host Naugatuck on September 10, then play at Ansonia on the 17.
