MIDDLEBURY-SOUTHBURY — The sixth-seed Guilford girls’ soccer team knocked Pomperaug out of the CIAC Class L tournament last Saturday with a 1-0 victory. The Panthers completed their fine season with an overall record of 13-3-4.
After a second round win, 2-0, over Naugatuck, Pomperaug was paired against Guilford, a 2-1 winner over Jonathan Law.
Neither team could score a goal in regulation and the scoreless tie continued through the first overtime.
Pomperaug had a 7-3 shots on goal advantage and also took more corner kicks, by a margin of 6-3. But the visitors from Guilford managed to score the game’s only goal in the second overtime period and walked away with the victory.
Samantha Grayson made five saves for the Panthers.
Earlier in the week, the third-seed Panthers beat Naugatuck. With 30 minutes remaining in the first half, Pomperaug had a breakaway goal as Holly McFarland passed to Kate Johnson.
Later in the first half, Erina Ismaili had an assist as she fired a long shot that bounced off the Greyhound goalkeeper and back to Jessica Rodriguez, who booted it into the nets for the 2-0 lead.
The shutout was a combined effort by Grayson, who had five saves in the first half, and Sydney Weiss who turned away three shots in the second half of play.
