To the Editor:
I am writing in response to a letter from Lou Alba published on February 5, 2020, entitled “Suggests Attention to Detail.”
Mr. Alba accused me of wanting to “take money from the rich to employ someone.” Mr. Alba may be misidentifying me in particular and Democrats in general with Robin Hood who, is reputed to have robbed the rich to help the poor and is a hero for our children.
The wealthy must take a more active role in equalizing profits and pay scales for its employees by providing a truly living wage. Republicans in Congress voted down increases in the minimum wages for 15 years, driving many workers into poverty. Large corporations benefited from lowered employee costs while the working men and their families suffered.
Mr. Alba and I disagree about the extent of the “economic miracle” occurring during President Trump’s administration. A strong economy that is sustained by high profits on Wall Street is not able to “lift all boats.” Many people at the lower end of the economic spectrum have not benefited from Trump’s economic policies as I mentioned previously.
Mr. Alba’s angry harangue against the mainstream media is troubling. He failed to included Fox News in his harangue. Fox News does a good job of reporting hard news in its daytime lineup, but its nighttime opinion shows are definitely not “fair and balanced” and represent a Republican bias.
Therein lies one of the major problems dividing our country. There is no agreement on the basic facts of an issue when one side (Fox News) reflects only its inherent political bias as news while the news of a majority of media outlets is classified as “fake news.”
Mr. Alba’s opinion against climate change is at odds with 98% of scientists.
As with many of his opinions, Mr. Alba needs to do more research.
