Southbury Ambulance Association has developed some tips to help with preventing falls in order to keep the community safe and healthy.
Simple accidents such as tripping over cords or slipping could mean broken bones for many older adults. Many things can cause falls, such as poor eyesight, medical conditions such as heart disease, loss of muscle mass, etc. According to the National Institute on Aging, more than one in four people, ages 65 and older, fall each year. This number keeps climbing; however, these falls can be prevented with simple precautions.
Some steps you can take to prevent falls are staying active with an exercise program. The National Institute on Aging recommends mild weighted activities to slow osteoporosis (a condition that weakens bones). You can also participate in monitored exercise programs, if you are afraid you cannot do it alone.
Another step you can take is wearing sensible shoes. Especially with all of the winter ice, wearing proper shoes can reduce falls. According to Mayo Clinic, you should wear flat shoes with non-skid soles.
Make sure to remove any home hazards as well. Move any cords away from walkways and secure any loose rugs with double-sided tape. Use non-slip mats in your bathroom and consider getting handrails throughout the home.
Lighting is another major factor in preventing falls. According to the Mayo Clinic, you should turn on your lights before going up and down stairs and place night-lights in bedrooms, bathrooms and hallways. Keeping your home well-lit will allow you to see hazards that could cause falls.
Lastly, you can use assistive devices. Some suggestions are handrails on the stairs, plastic seat and/or handrails for the shower and non-slip mats for hardwood steps. All of these could make getting around a lot safer.
