I want to express my gratitude to the many people who attended the Law Enforcement Appreciation Rally in Southbury during an unseasonably warm day on May 21. The rally followed the end of National Police Week.
Those who attended heard speeches from law enforcement officials and candidates remembering those who died in the line of duty and expressing their support for law enforcement officers across the country. Notably John Krupinsky, president of the Fraternal Order of Police for the State of Connecticut, formally announced the group’s endorsement of House Rep. Cindy Harrison and gubernatorial candidate Bob Stefanowski.
The FOP is the world’s largest organization of sworn law enforcement officers. Both Cindy and Bob graciously accepted the FOP’s coveted endorsement and gave speeches expressing their support of law enforcement.
Ms. Harrison detailed how she had collaborated with her colleagues in the State House in Hartford to favorably amend the “Police Accountability Act” concerning the use of deadly force. She stated that she will continue working to restore “qualified immunity” protection to local and state police officers that was stripped away by this act.
United States Senate candidates Peter Lumaj and Leora Levy also spoke of their support for law enforcement, while detailing the measures they would take when in office.
The keynote speaker was Mark Morgan who served as border chief during both the Obama and Trump administrations. Mr. Morgan gave a passionate speech providing examples of heroic actions of law enforcement officers, the current problems encountered by police throughout the country and the indescribable chaos occurring at the southwest border.
Mr. Morgan encouraged those who attended that they must stand up and make their voices heard. He stated that we must come up with solutions while holding both sides of the political aisle accountable.
