Ruth Mildred Westover

SOUTHBURY — Ruth Mildred Westover peacefully passed away on Sunday May 9, 2021, at the age of 85. She was born on April 18, 1936, in Southeast, N.Y., the daughter of the late Percy Leroy Miller and the late Myrtle Totten Miller. She was the next to youngest of 14 Miller children.

She shared 38 happy years of marriage with her beloved husband, the late Robert Earl Westover, Sr. Ruth earned her GED from the U.S. military while her husband served. Together they built a home in the town of Southbury and raised three beautiful children, Gail Louise Westover, the late Robert Earl Westover, Jr., and the late Ann Marie Gagner, all of Southbury.

In her younger years she grew up climbing trees and creating mischief with her brothers and sisters. She was a “tomboy” through and through. Once she had a family of her own, one of her favorite past times was fishing with her husband and children.

She also enjoyed tending to her flower beds and picking berries along the outskirts of her yard. She was an avid sports fan, giving much attention to her favorite baseball team, the Mets, but her love of sports didn’t stop with the professionals. She also spent many years cheering on her six grandchildren as they played on their various sports teams.

When the great-grandchildren started coming along, she got to continue this tradition. She always enjoyed playing cards (and winning) against her family, her trips to the casino for slots and bingo, and putting in the last piece of a 1,000-piece puzzle.

Ruth was a loving and caring woman. A mother to not only her own children, but to all the children in the neighborhood. She had an open door policy that made everyone feel so welcome in her home.

Along with her daughter Gail, Ruth is survived by her six grandchildren, Tanya Platt, Jessica Ciskey and her husband, Chris, Alicia Minner and her husband, Mike, Jason Gagner and his partner, Kylie, Lauren Gagner and her partner, Frank, Robert Westover, III, and his wife, Jessica; her son in-law, Scott Gagner; her daughter in-law, Denise Westover; 10 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

She is predeceased by her brothers, Jesse, Norman, Oscar, Stewart, Allen, Stanley, David, Melvin, Gordon, Douglas, and sisters, Vivian, Helen and Ella.

Ruth will be loved and missed by all.

Services will be held as a private burial at Southford Cemetery in Oxford.

In lieu of flowers, donors are asked to consider a donation to the Ruth M. Westover Memorial Fund to help the family cover medical and burial costs at
