WOODBURY — The Open Space, Farm and Forest application has a Sunday, October 31 deadline.

Any forms received after the fact will be late and the space designation will not be reflected on the 2021 Grand List. There are no exceptions.

Once the land classification has been granted, it will only be removed if the use changes or the ownership changes. New owners can reapply.

If the property has multiple owners, all signatures are required on the application.

Open Space classification allows homeowners a reduced assessment on land over and above their building lot, reducing taxes for the excess land.

The property must be more than double the zoning requirements for the lot size.

A Certified Foresters Report must be filed with the forest application and approved by the Commissioner of the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. The date of the report must be no later than October 1 of the year the classification is requested. A new report is also required for transfers if the previous report filed in the Assessor’s Office is older than ten years.

Land that is taken out of open space, farm or forest classification within the 10-year period will be subject to a conveyance tax penalty unless it is an excepted transfer.
