LITCHFIELD — The White Memorial Conservation Center will host the Volcanic Explosion at Tonga with Tom Alena  at 3 p.m. Satuday, May 21, via Zoom.

The Tonga underwater volcanic eruption in the South Pacific exploded with the force of 18 megatons of TNT and created shockwaves through every layer of earth’s atmosphere when it occured on January 15.

The volcanic plume reached greater heights than any eruption ever captured in the satellite record, and generated an unparalleled number of lightning strikes — almost 590,000 over the course of three days.

The event is free for members; there is a fee for nonmembers.
