SOUTHBURY — The Rev. Walter Pitman, longtime senior pastor of the United Church of Christ, Southbury, will retire at the end of this summer. During his 25 years in Southbury, Walter “Scooter” Pitman has been a friend, a counselor, a teacher and a leader for the congregation and the community. He is also a friendly face and a mentor to many people in and around Southbury.

Rev. Pitman grew up in Newtown and graduated from Western Connecticut State University. Later he attended seminary at Andover Newton Theological School in Massachusetts.

Following his ordination in 1979, he served at Congregational churches in Darien and Massachusetts.

He came to Southbury in 1994 from Chatham on Cape Cod.

Persons wishing to express love and appreciation for Pastor Walter through a card or letter may do so by mailing to the United Church of Christ, Southbury, 283 Main St. North, Southbury 06488, or via email to united.ch.christ@sbcglobal.net.

The congregation will host a celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, June 16, on the Green next to the United Church of Christ, Southbury. The open house will provide a chance to bid farewell to Rev. Pitman, his wife, Stephanie, and their sons, Alex and Ricky, and to congratulate Rev. Pitman on his retirement.

There is no rain date for this event as it will move inside the Social Hall in case of rain.

Those from the community who have been touched by the Pitman family are cordially invited to attend the June 16 celebration.
