BRIDGEWATER — The Bridgewater Fair will celebrate its 68th year from August 16 to 18 with rides, games, animals, music, special acts, shopping and contests, at the fairgrounds, 100 Main St. South. Gates will be open from 4 to 11 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday, and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
The annual Bridgewater Firemen’s Parade and opening ceremonies will start at 6:30 p.m. Friday, August 16, featuring the Second Company Governor’s Horse Guard and more than 40 fire companies from throughout Connecticut.
During the weekend, there will be a new Majestic Spectacular Motorcycle Thrill Show, with the Wheel of Death.
Last year’s favorite, the Dock Diving Dogs, return to show off their skills with the Border Collie Herding Demonstrations.
The fair will also have its historic features and charm like racing pig contests, livestock and agricultural displays, games, amusement rides, and famous food cooked by firemen, such as the roast beef sandwiches, pulled pork, corn, chicken and tacos.
Art and photography shows will take place as will flower, baking, vegetable and fruit competitions, needlework and hobby displays, a pie eating contest, hay bale and skillet toss, tractor, oxen and pony pulls/shows, crafts, and more.
This year’s raffle, sponsored by the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department, will award three prizes at 6 p.m. Monday, August 19.
Tickets are $10 each, with proceeds going to the fire department, which is solely supported by the fair and raffle; prizes include a 2019 Toyota Tacoma Sport with bonus $2,000 gas card, $2000 VISA gift card package, and $1,000 VISA gift card package.
Raffle tickets may be purchased at the fair or early at the Bridgewater Volunteer Fire Department, Bridgewater Convenience Store (Mobile), Bridgewater Village Store, New Milford Elephant’s Trunk Flea Market, Bridgewater Town Hall, Bridgewater Senior Center, or The Burnham Library.
Entertainment will begin with pig racing at 4:30, 7:30, and 10:30 p.m. Friday, Dissonant Delusion at 5 p.m., Dock Diving Dogs at 6 p.m., the Majestic Spectacular Motorcycle Thrill Show at 5 and 8 p.m., JR Waters on the bandstand at 8:30 p.m., and skillet toss at 8:45 p.m.
Saturday shows include the children’s pet parade at 9:30 a.m. with pre-registration, children’s pedal tractor pull for ages 5 to 10 at 11 a.m., antique tractor pull at 1 p.m., border collie demonstrations at 10:30 a.m., 3:30 and 6:30 p.m., racing pigs at 10 a.m., 1:30, 4:30, 6:30, and 10:30 p.m., the Majestic Spectacular Motorcycle Thrill Show at 11 a.m., 2, 5, and 8 p.m., and Dock Diving Dogs at noon, 2:30, 5, and 7:30 p.m.
Flashback will appear at 1:30 p.m., Matson Rose at 4 p.m., The Creative Force Band at 9 p.m., with the skillet toss at 12:15 and 2:15 p.m. or hay bales at 1:15 p.m.
Children’s pie eating will take place after noon; signup is available at the secretary’s office.
Sunday will feature the children’s pedal tractor pull at 11 a.m., garden tractor pull at 11:30 a.m., the Majestic Spectacular Motorcycle Thrill Show at 10 a.m., 1, and 4 p.m., racing pigs at 10 a.m., 1 and 5 p.m., Dock Diving Dogs at 1 and 4 p.m., border collie demonstrations at noon and 2:30 p.m., Mad Hatter Chorus at noon and RevaJean at 3 p.m. on the bandstand.
Adult and children’s pie eating contests will start after noon with the hay bale toss at 12:15 p.m.
Participants will be able to take a chance at the Cake Lotto and win a home baked cake, bread, or cookies.
The Lions Club will offer eye screening for children age 2 to 7 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Organizers note that the fairgrounds recovered from the excessive water and mud issues of last summer and food tents will have a solid base.
Admission is $8 for adults, $6 for seniors and children age 12 and under are admitted free.
Three-day passes are available for $18 at the Mobil Station and Bridgewater Town Hall.
Parking is free.
No pets will be allowed on the fairgrounds.
