WATERTOWN — Bill Hosking, the fourth-generation owner of the James S. Hosking Nursery Inc. and Red Barn Gift Shoppe, has announced that the nursery, garden center and gift shoppe retail divisions will close later this year at the conclusion of a going-out-of-business liquidation sale.

The water garden, drilled stone fountains and bulk mulches/soils components of the retail business will continue until such time as either the land and building are sold or until a buyer is found to continue the business. More information on this will be forthcoming.

All water garden and landscape services will also continue into the future to provide continuity for Hosking’s valued, long term customers.

A closeout sale began on November 6 and will be ongoing, with discounts offered on most items throughout the store.

Having spent his entire life in the family business, it was after much soul searching that Mr. Hosking decided that it was the appropriate time to scale back the retail portion of the business.

Many factors contributed to this decision, including the changes to customer buying habits with the advent of the “Big Box Stores,” e-commerce trends, increased overhead for “brick and mortar” stores, Covid-19, as well as the desire to semi-retire and enjoy being a part of his four grandchildren’s lives growing up.

Bill said he cannot thank his loyal customer base enough for all the years of support, saying, “you will all have an everlasting place in my heart and be part of cherished memories of a lifetime.”
