AREA — Meals on Wheels of Western Connecticut raised $11,669.90 from local grocery stores for the Buy A Wheel campaign. The following stores took part in the campaign: LaBonne’s Market of Watertown and Woodbury, Adam’s Hometown Market of Watertown and Thomaston, New Morning Market of Woodbury and Northville Market of New Milford, Dinova’s Four Corner Store of Middlebury, Walsh’s Market of Wolcott and Monteiro’s Restaurant of Waterbury.

Cashiers would ask patrons to either purchase a wheel for $1 or to round up their grocery bill in support of Meals on Wheels. Funds raised from customers will be used to provide meals to homebound seniors and to purchase pet food for recipient’s pets.

Currently Meals on Wheels is serving 900 homebound seniors each day, which is more people than budgeted for. In addition the pet food program We all Love Our Pets provides pet food to over 120 recipient’s animal companions.

“Our fundraising efforts like Buy A Wheel help the program fill the funding gaps and address the increasing need for the program,” said Lisa LaBonte, director of Meals on Wheels. “Many donors don’t realize that besides helping provide meals to seniors, their support is also helping us provide pet food to our client’s cats and dogs”

“When Meals on Wheels recipients struggle to meet their own meal needs, then they are usually struggling to meet their pet’s meal needs,” Ms. LaBonte said. “Besides just recently eliminating an eight month waiting list for people to receive meals we have also had to cancel our monthly pet food distribution several times during the year because we do not have enough cat food to meet every need, so we are very appreciative of the support received through the Buy A Wheel Campaign.”

Those interested in making a monetary donation, donating a bag of cat food, volunteering or to get more information may contact Lisa LaBonte at 203-575-4208 or llabonte@newoppinc.org.
