WHS Second at NVL Tourney: Indians 12th At CIAC D-III Golf

TOP NOTCH - Watertown High School golfers and co-captains Eric Forte and Mason LaCapra were named to the 2021 All-NVL team.

NEW BRITAIN - On a scorching hot June 7 afternoon, the Watertown High School golf team played in the CIAC’s Division III championship tournament at the Stanley Golf Course, a 5970-yard, par 71 course.

The Indians, NVL tournament second-place finishers four days before, finished 12th in the 20-team field, which was led by St. Joseph of Trumbull by one shot (329-330) over Lewis Mills High School.

Watertown, the only NVL team in the field, finished with a score of 372.

Playing in a fan-free environment at Watewrtown Golf Club on June 3, St. Paul Catholic, led by sophomore Matt Downes’ round of one-over par 72, decisively won the league championship with a score of 344, 16 shots ahead of the second-place Indians with Holy Cross High School coming in third.

Downes was the runaway individual winner, finishing nine shots ahead of his Falcons’ teammate, Brandon Frye.

Eric Forte and Mason LaCapra were low-scorers with rounds of 86 for WHS, followed by Nate LaMadeleine and Colin Leach.
