WATERTOWN - Not a bad debut.

For her first game as head coach of the defending NVL champion Watertown High School, Melissa Ciarlo drew about as pressure-packed an assignment as possible.

Naugatuck High School is up first; show us what you got, coach.

As she did so often when starring at WHS and at the University of St. Joseph, Ciarlo did, guiding the Indians to a 1-0 win over the Greyhounds at the Mills Complex on September 12.

Coming up big with the only goal of the game was Morgan Dodge on an assist by Melina LaCapra in the first half.

From there, the always-stingy Watertown defense did the rest and the locals were off-and-kicking in their title defense, which continued at Ansonia High School on September 18.

No, not a bad debut at all, and for Ciarlo and the Indians; in fact, the opening act may have been the beginning of another memorable fall.
