WATERTOWN - The afternoon of October 20 is one that a young football player, his family, teammates, coaches and those in attendance will not forget anytime soon, if ever. In their final home game of the season, the Water-Oak 12U Pop Warner team, in co-operation with their opponents, the Plainville Colts, took part in a special event just before halftime at the John J. Mills Athletic Complex in honor of teammate Jack Caouette.
The event became known as "The Jumping Jack Playground Fundraiser," a project started by the Rotary Club to add handicap accessible equipment to the playground at Veterans' Park that would not only benefit Jack but all local children with special needs.
"Members of our team approached us coaches and told us they wanted Jack to participate with our team," said Indians' coach Brian Weidemier.
"We contacted with the coaching staff of Plainville and they were more than happy to help us out," said Weideimier.
Under threatening skies which failed to damper the spirits of those in attendance, including his parents Dan and Holly, the Indians lined up Caouette in their offense against the Plainville defense and allowed him to get a staged carry.
Caouette, with some help from his teammates, swept right and into the end zone, where he was promptly swarmed by his teammates.
It was not only a day to remember for Jack Caouette, but the Indians as well, as they used the emotion of the day to carry them to a 19-0 victory which evened their record at 4-4 after an 0-4 start.
"Everything went off better than we could have imagined," said Weidemier. "The support we received from both teams, parents and supporters was amazing."
