THOMASTON -  Each year, the end of the Fourth of July fireworks marks the beginning of the Heery Summer Running Series at Nystroms Pond in Thomaston.

For over twenty years, runners and walkers have gathered at the pond on Saturday mornings to work on their fitness.

The event consists of a series of 2.2-mile runs through the neighborhoods surrounding Nystroms Pond; on Saturday, July 6 the series gets underway at the entrance to the Pond at 9 a.m. with the series finale on August 26.

Said series director Mark Oldsen “Each weekly event will begin at the Turner Road beach and tennis court entrance to the park with participants accumulating points each week by participating, setting a personal best or placing well in their age group.

“At the end of the summer points are totaled and prizes are awarded,” said Olsen, who added, “participation is free to all runners and walkers and we welcome all who’d like to take parts from the surrounding area.”

The Heery Summer Series event is sponsored by the Thomaston Recreation Department.
