Crusaders Defeat WHS Cross Country

WATERBURY - In the first meet of their shortened season, the Watertown High School cross country teams faced Holy Cross High School on October 6 in NVL dual meets, with the Crusaders coming out on top of the Indians in both.

The Holy Cross boys defeated the WHS boys, 19-36 while the HC girls just got the Indians, 25-30.    

In the boys race, Joseph Dane of Holy Cross, a Watertown resident, cruised to a first place finish in a time of 18-21, well ahead of teammates Tommy Lapham and Colby Calabrese (also a Watertown resident).

The top WHS finishers were Alex Cole, who came home fourth in 20:17 and Matt Creter, who captured sixth in 20:46.

Despite the one-two finish by Watertown’s Emma Gallagher and Lana Kolpa, Holy Cross runners crossed the finish line third through seventh, and that proved enough for the Crusaders to squeeze out the close-call win.

Gallagher’s margin of victory was decisive, as here time of 23:18 was 47 seconds ahead of runner-up Kolpa, a freshman who made an impression in her first varsity race.

Sara Cox, a sophomore, was the next WHS finisher, coming in eighth in 30:20.
