To the Editor:

As an appointed member of the Town Council, Ken Demirs must resign from the Planning and Zoning Commission. As the council appoints and oversees the members of all town commissions, it is a conflict for any council member to serve on a commission. This is as crazy as having the Town Council review ethics complaints on actions of the Town Council.

During the November 5 P&Z meeting, Mr. Demirs had to recuse himself for business dealings with an applicant, and a second time due to discussion involving the council. These frequent recusals indicate he has no place being on P&Z because he has his hands in too many things.

When filling P&Z vacancies at the last council meeting, Mr. Demirs said he would abstain “just in case.” Did he think he had a choice? Should Mr. Demirs run for election to the council next year, the voters should remember his lack of ethical awareness.

Perhaps the next Charter Revision Commission will determine that Planning and Zoning members should be elected so we can exclude realtors and developers in town who might use their P&Z position for financial gain.
