To the Editor:

The estimated cost of the senior center, by the architect as described in their space assessment, was $25 million. It does not include a swimming pool. He said a pool would be an incremental cost increase, the space assessment does not include a swimming pool.

See for yourself, the video is can be viewed at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rqCFCgMHQlk. You can also read the space needs assessment in the packet section of the town council meeting on 10/18/2021.

The architect also said the estimated cost of the police station would be $15-20 million. He didn’t want to be quoted on these costs, but residents should be aware that the total projects could cost around $45 million. He also said that the two projects do not have to be done at the same time.

I believe the best approach would be for the police station be done first. Our bond service limit would support 7.5 million for each of the next two years, or $15 million. In two years the amount we can bond increases dramatically where it would be reasonable to consider $25 million for a senior center. The bond service limit allows for town budgeting to be done without increasing taxes because of these bonding costs.
