Scouts from Boy Scout Troop 140 at St. Mary Magdalen Church, Oakville, visited the New England Railroad Museum in Thomaston to earn the Railroading Merit Badge. NERM volunteer Richard Bingham showed the scouts different types of freight and passenger trains, safety precautions for workers and passengers, guidelines to follow when near tracks and how to report a malfunction. They were also shown how to change tracks, how crossing gates and advance warning systems work and how to identify pavement markings and colored signals.
