TORRINGTON — Marilyn Dons Varno, 84, of Torrington, died June 20, 2021, at home with her family after a short illness.

Marilyn was born on March 3, 1937, in Adams, Mass., the only child of the late Warren and Mary (Hathaway) Shaw. 

She attended Adams State Teachers College and married her high school sweetheart, William E. Varno.

She taught in public schools both in Massachusetts and Watertown, most recently at Swift Junior High School. She received a master’s degree from Western Connecticut State University. 

She had a passion for helping her students and was well liked by both her students and colleagues.

Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Laura Varno; her son-in-law, Bruce Szczesniak, and her granddaughter, Isabel Szczesniak, all of Harwinton.

Funeral services and burial are private and at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.

The Hickcox Funeral Home, 195 Main St., Watertown, is in charge of arrangements.
