NORTH HERO, Vt. — Donald Martell passed away peacefully on August 23, 2021.
Born on November 4, 1932, in Montgomery Center, Vt., Don is now resting in peace with his beloved wife Joan, his son John, his father Anthony, his mother Hattie and his brothers and sisters.
He leaves behind his sister, Gwen Rasbury of Jacksonville, Fla.; his daughters, Beth Vierra and her husband, Dan, of Lowell, Vt., Tammy Martell of Watertown, Laurie Martell of Watertown and Colleen Short and husband, Steve, of Bloomingdale, Mich.; his grandchildren, Kelly Mills, Marci Emmons, Jonathan Blazys, Lauren LaPorta and Megan Guerrera; his five great-grandchildren; his good friend, Lorraine Pecor, and his beloved dog, Sadie.
Don owned and operated a successful plumbing business, Martell’s Plumbing, in Watertown for over 25 years, and he was lucky enough to retire at an early age. He traveled to places most would dream about.
He was a veteran of the Korean War, and also a lifelong, active member of the Watertown Lions Club where he held many chairs and wore many hats. He loved being out in nature, fishing and hunting, and in his younger days trapping bears.
Don’s most cherished place was his beloved home in North Hero, Vt., a home which he built by hand with the help of his friends and family. Living directly on Lake Champlain was truly his little slice of heaven.
He enjoyed simple things like chopping firewood for his wood stove, taking care of his garden, maintaining his beach and tinkering in his boathouse. He loved summer reunions with his entire family while roasting pigs, making crepes, boating, skiing and relaxing on his deck overlooking the beautiful lake.
Donald’s services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Donald’s name to the Watertown Fire Department or Watertown Lions Club.
