WATERTOWN — Crawford Eugene Slason, 77, of Watertown, passed away peacefully Monday, August 23, 2021, at St. Francis Hospital in Hartford. He was the husband of Jeanne (Terrill) Slason.
Crawford was born on July 10, 1944, in Waterbury, son of the late Frederick Crawford and Evelyn (Long) Slason, Jr. A lifelong resident of Watertown, he was a graduate of St. John’s School and Watertown High School. He earned a degree in horticulture from UConn and served in the Army Reserve.
When he was younger, he worked at Hosking Nursery and had his own landscaping business for several years before taking a position at Watertown Building Supply. He owned Crawford Slason Carpentry for many years and was a member of the First Congregational Church.
Crawford was an assistant scoutmaster for Troop 188 and a veteran of the Watertown Fire Department. He liked old trucks and owned and restored four antique fire trucks and helped other fire truck enthusiasts restore their trucks. He was a member of the Society for the Preservation and Appreciation of Antique Fire Apparatus in America and a former member of the Connecticut Cellar Savers, where he held several offices.
Besides his wife of 53 years, Crawford leaves his daughter, Laura Slason of Bethlehem; his son, Dan Slason of Harwich, Mass.; his sister, Barbara Peach of Winter Haven, Fla.; four grandchildren, Holly Perry, Danielle Slason, Hunter Slason and Schuyler Slason, and three great-grandsons, Owen, Luke and Adam, who loved fire trucks as much as he did.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Ann Zaccaria.
Graveside services and burial of ashes will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 2, in Evergreen Cemetery, 183 North St.
