The Watertown Police Department: Officer Promoted to Detective

Abby Rivera was recently promoted to the rank of detective with the Watertown Police Department. Detective Rivera is pictured with acting chief Josh Bernegger.

WATERTOWN — Officer Avelina “Abby” Rivera was promoted to the rank of detective in the Watertown Police Department on Friday, May 15.

Detective Rivera is a 13-year veteran of the department, working mainly on the evening shift and most recently on the day shift of the Patrol Division.

Detective Rivera is the coordinator of the Crisis Intervention Team and is a certified law enforcement instructor in the field of Youth Crisis Intervention.

For the past 11 years, she has been a certified child seat technician, ensuring the safety of hundreds of children in Watertown and the Greater Waterbury Area.

She is a member of the Peer Support Team, assisting other officers through traumatic experiences.

Detective Rivera is very active in the community, volunteering, providing tours and dedicating her time as acting president of the Police Benevolent Association and the liaison to the WaterOak Crimestoppers.

During her patrol career, Detective Rivera has been awarded 10 letters of recognition, two departmental commendations, the MADD Recognition and the AAA Traffic Safety Hero award.

Detective Rivera has a degree in criminal justice.
