Hospital Names Director of Endoscopy

Demetrios Tzimas, M.D.

WATERBURY — St. Mary’s Hospital welcomes Demetrios Tzimas, M.D., as director of Endoscopy and Advanced Gastroenterologist for Trinity Health of New England Medical Group.

Dr. Tzimas will join the gastroenterology team of doctors Joel Garsten, Albert Marano, Bhupinder Lyall, Russell Parvin, Ronald Zlotoff and Magdi Khalil; physician assistants Michele Pierce and Stephanie Dibble and advanced practice nurse Macaela Cirish.

Dr. Tzimas will practice at 60 Westwood Ave., Suite 314.

Dr. Tzimas, board-certified in gastroenterology, received his medical degree from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

He performed both his internal medicine residency and gastroenterology fellowship at the New York University School of Medicine, where he was named both Resident and Fellow of the Year. He completed an advanced and therapeutic endoscopy fellowship at Stony Brook University Hospital, where he was on the faculty and the director of the Medical School Gastroenterology Pathophysiology Course.

He worked as the director of endoscopy at Bellevue Hospital and worked in the Department of Advanced Therapeutics and Innovation at NYU.

He has published numerous articles and written book chapters on pancreatic and biliary therapeutics. His focus of interest is diseases of the pancreas and bile duct, GI cancers and endoscopic suturing in bariatric patients.

Dr. Tzimas is accepting new patients with general and advanced gastroenterology needs. He is available for consultation and gastroenterology procedures including endoscopies, colonoscopies, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and endoscopic ultrasound, among others.
